About Us
The Shelter's Mission:
The mission of the HCSC, is to provide a safe, seasonal shelter to woman, children and families. A secondary mission is to provide support through case management and collaboration with area agencies to develop self-sufficiency for homeless residents.
The Shelter has been extremely successful in assisting over 80% of their homeless residents in obtaining either transitional or permanent housing. The Shelter has been in operation for over a decade in response to the challenge of full-time area shelters filling to capacity. The Shelter currently consists of more than 50 committed volunteers and 5 staff members.
History and Background
The Homeless Center for Strafford County (HCSC) is a volunteer based 501(c)(3) organization providing services for homeless women and families during the winter months.
The Strafford County Emergency Shelter Coalition was formed in 1998 by a group of committed citizens who recognized the desperate need for family shelter during the coldest months in New Hampshire. During the first three years of its humble beginnings, the shelter was located in the Salvation Army gymnasium in Rochester, NH and operated as an overnight shelter. In the summer of 2001, Waste Management of NH donated the use of a 6-bedroom residential home. Through strong community support, and generous volunteerism, the shelter is proud to have served hundreds of homeless families in the Strafford County area.
