Volunteers are the backbone of our shelter. We currently have 50+ compassionate members of our community who share the gift of time. Won't you consider joining them?
The Homeless Center for Strafford County values its volunteers and the bridges that are built in our community. Volunteers strengthen the community's connection to HCSC, helping to ensure sustainable, shelter services.
Following are examples of projects and work that HCSC volunteers undertake:
Both individual volunteers and company teams of volunteers often organize fundraiser for the shelter. Past fundraisers include 5k runs, campouts, yardsales, concerts, bike-a-thons, auctions, partial donations of company bonuses, Day of Caring, food drives, adopt a family for the holidays.

- Overseeing shelter/clients to ensure a safe communal environment
- Activities with children
- Preparing meals
- Fundraising
- Sharing your special talents
- Supervisory of the office
- Organizing food donations
- Collecting clothing donations
- Helping childeren with homework and tutoring
- Holiday wrapping
- Holiday "all house" dinner prepping
- Minor repairs and cleaning when residents move out
- Keeping the volunteer & donations list updated in our computer bank
- Plowing snow during the winter on weekends
- Shoveling snow on sidewalks and steps
- Weekly thank you card mailings
- USDA pickup of food donation every two months

Time Commitment & Process for Volunteering
The Shelter welcomes new volunteers whenever possible. Your talent and time will be put to use in a variety of ways to help the shelter carry out its mission. As a volunteer, your time can be donated as little as a few days per month to a steady schedule of one day per week. Shifts range from 2-5 hours. There is no limit to how often you volunteer, or how meaningful the reward will be.
In order to become a volunteer at The Shelter, the following steps are needed:
- Schedule an interview with the shelter
- Attend a 2 hour training orientation
- Complete a background check
- Shadow with a seasoned volunteer
